On June 3, 1991, an African-American couple and the Toledo Fair Housing Center filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio under the Fair Housing Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 3601 et seq., against Centrust Mortgage Corporation.

The plaintiffs, represented by private counsel, alleged that Centrust engaged in discriminatory mortgage lending practices. According to an article in CQ Researcher, in October 1990 the couple waited in line for two days outside the Centrust offices for the chance to receive one of a small number of loans offered to first-time home buyers. Having been preapproved two weeks earlier, the couple was shocked when their application was ultimately denied, particularly after learning that white couples with whom they had become friendly while waiting in line had been approved. The couple went to the Toledo Fair Housing Center for help, which led to this suit. The case was referred to Magistrate Judge James G. Carr for pretrial proceedings, which continued throughout 1991. After months of inactivity, the parties reached an out-of-court settlement for a reported $20,000. The District Court (Judge Bernard Friedman) dismissed the case on August 4, 1992.
