(This summary is temporary while we research the case further). In 2002, the defendant, then 18 years old, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Two decades later, the Michigan Supreme Court held in People v. Parks that mandating life-without-parole sentences for defendants who were at 18 at the time of crime violated the Michigan Constitution's prohibition on cruel or unusual punishment clause. The defendant in this case filed a motion for relief from judgment. On April 1, 2025, the Michigan Supreme Court held that the People v. Parks decision applied retroactively, and defendant was entitled to resentencing.
