Case Summary

(This summary is temporary while we research the case further). In 2024, an incarcerated individual sued the Rhode Island Department of Corrections ("RIDOC") in the District of Rhode Island. The plaintiff alleged that RIDOC repeatedly denied his requests to obtain and wear and Apache headband, thereby depriving him of his right to free exercise of religion. On April 30, 2025, the parties settled and dismissed the case. The settlement provided that plaintiff would be permitted to wear an Apache headband and that RIDOC would adopt and implement a process for inmates whose religion was not recognized to identify their religion and seek approval to obtain religious items or attend religious services.
