Case Summary

In September 2002, the EEOC district office in Detroit, Michigan brought this suit against Meijer Stores Limited Partnership in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. The complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it refused to accommodate an employee whose religious faith dictated that she not work on Sundays and subsequently terminated her for not being available on those days.

The parties settled and a consent decree was entered in July 2003. According to the terms of the consent decree, the defendant would refrain from retaliating on the basis of religion, make reasonable accommodations in the future for religious employees, pay the aggrieved woman $22,000, modify its existing EEO policy to include religion, provide EEO training, and post EEO notices. The terms of the decree ran for one year.
