In December 1999, the Indianapolis District Office filed this suit against Oak-Rite Manufacturing Corporation, a metal-working factory, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. We do not have a copy of the complaint. However, according to the Court's opinion, the complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to reasonably accommodate the charging party's religious beliefs. Specifically, the defendant did not hire the charging party, a female employee, because she refused to comply with a pants-only safety policy, claiming that it violated her religious beliefs which required her to wear a long skirt. In November 2000, the plaintiff filed a partial motion for summary judgment regarding a record-keeping provision of Title VII. The defendant filed a motion for summary judgment in December 2000 regarding the religious discrimination charges. The Court granted both motions in August 2001, finding for the defendant on the religious discrimination charges. Therefore, the plaintiff did not obtain relief except for an injunction ordering the defendant to comply with the record-keeping provisions of Title VII.
