EEOC's Milwaukee, Wisconsin office filed this lawsuit against the defendant, CEC Entertainment, Inc. (f.k.a. Showbiz Pizza Time, Inc.; d.b.a Chuck E' Cheese's) in the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (Madison) on 09/30/1998. The individual complainant intervened in the suit. The case was immediately referred, upon consent of the parties, to Magistrate Judge Stephen L. Crocker for all proceedings. The court granted the plaintiff's motion for partial summary judgment but denied the defendant's motions to dismiss and for summary judgment. Thereafter, the parties engaged in intensive discovery from 08/1999 to 10/1999. The jury found the defendant liable after four days of trial and awarded the plaintiff $13,070,000.00 in damages after another four days. The court entered the final judgment on 05/11/2000, denying the defendant's motion for judgment as a matter of law and reducing the final damages to the complainant to $309,657.00 in addition to more than $115,000 in fees and costs to the EEOC and the complainant's attorney.
