On April 30, 2002, the San Francisco office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit under Title VII against the current and former owners of the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach in the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands. The EEOC claimed that the defendants had discriminated against 40 of their employees on the basis of their Filipino national origin.On March 3, 2004, the parties entered into a consent decree. On March 3, 2004, the parties entered into a consent decree. Under the terms of the decree, the Tan Holdings Corporation (the former owners of the hotel) was required to pay $400,000 in damages to the complainants. In addition, Asia Pacific Hotel, Inc. (the current owners of the hotel) were enjoined from failing or refusing to renew the one-year employment contracts of 23 current and former Filipino employees. They were also ordered to pay for travel costs, entry permits, and work authorizations for nonresident plaintiffs, and to offer them housing and meals on the hotel premises at the same rate offered to other employees. On March 3, 2004, the district court adopted the consent decree and dismissed the case with prejudice. We have no further information in this case, since we don't have the consent decree or the complaint.
