Case Summary

The EEOC's Los Angeles office filed this suit on September 30, 2003 in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada, Las Vegas Division. The suit alleged that defendant Sun Cab Company, Inc., doing business as Nellis Cab Company, violated Title VII by refusing to hire the complainant and other individuals because they were from Ethiopia. The EEOC filed a partial motion for summary judgment that was granted, defeating defendant's argument that the EEOC did not fully attempt to conciliate before filing. Defendant's motion for summary judgment, filed on June 17, 2005, was denied. After the motion for summary judgment was denied, a trial date was set for August 28, 2006. Then, on June 27, 2006, a settlement conference was scheduled for August 10, 2006. A settlement was reached at the conference. A consent decree was subsequently entered and approved on December 12, 2006. In the decree the defendant agreed to pay $50,000 and hire an EEOC compliance monitor. One of the many duties designated for the monitor by the decree was the oversight of an extensive auditing process to analyze defendant's future hiring procedures. The decree was to last for three years. The docket sheet doesn't show any further enforcement took place; the case was presumably closed in 2009.
